Specialising in timber architecture
Timber Design was formed in 2002 as a design studio dedicated to Timber Architecture. The practice is based in Devon and works primarily in the UK.
The objective is to design innovative, contemporary Timber Architecture that 'goes together' with simplicity and ease, both visually and technically. The importance of construction and detailing is recognised alongside aesthetics light and space, the aim being well conceived architecture that can be elegantly realised.
Timber, as a material, provides exciting possibilities in architectural and structural design that have long been recognised and employed. New challenges, materials and standards ensure that innovation remains of primary importance when designing with timber.
A combination of traditional carpentry techniques & precise detailing provides complimentary contrast that has become a hallmark of Timber Design Limited. This mixture of raw, natural timber and precise engineering is capable of providing very light, open and efficient structures.
Current thinking on sustainability in construction provides an important framework to the decision making process by taking into account embodied & lifecycle energy, reversibility & recyclability, material & process toxicity and the wider social implications of choices made.
Computer technology, allowing complex geometry modelling and advanced visualisation techniques have been fully adopted and implemented at Timber Design Limited.
Commissions to date centre on contemporary timber houses and include other types of Timber Design: eco houses, Douglas fir framed self build, modern oak frame barn houses, timber frame extensions, public buildings, timber sculptures, timber bridges, wooden landscape & garden structures, timber engineering & product design.
